Lyric Kidd
Past Notes
December 22nd, 2025
Lyric played through Knockin' on Heaven's Door, and we kept boostin the speed up from 70% to 100%! Great job!
After that we added The Gambler by Kenny Rogers, and went through it without the recording.
December 8th, 2025
Lyric has been working on his D, and is doing much better on it! We started out with reviewing the chords in Knockin' and then played through with the recording a number of times, working up from 75% speed to 85%.
We did the hits at about the 3:45 mark. I showed him how to strum down-up like a paint brush and we tried it a couple of times before running out of time.
December 1st, 2025
Lyric is sick today.
November 24th, 2025
We went through Lightning Crashes, and then added Knockin' on Heaven's Door. The D chord is slowing Lyric down a bit and sometimes plays the chords he hasn't caught up with yet. The extra chord means he loses time with the song.

We went through Ring of Fire, and then added Live, Lightning Crashes:

This has a capo on the 2nd fret, and we played the chords D, A, E. (key of A)

We did some drills on the C chord today, trying to get to a speed that we can play along with Johnny Cash. He's close, but needs to do a bit more practising during the week. He said it wasn't a week of a lot of practise, but committed to try harder.
November 3rd, 2025
Lyric did great today! We went through Something in the Orange, increasing the speed from 65%, 75%, 85%, 95%, and finally 100%!
We then took a quick look at Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash, but ran out of time before getting too far on that.
Keep working on Something in the Orange, and a bit at Ring of Fire this week.

Good job today, Lyric! We wrote out the next section of Something In The Orange, the C, G, D, Em section.
We worked at going through the song at 65% speed, and strumming the chords just once (instead of the twice) to give him time to switch.
October 20th, 2025
We started out going through all the chords so far. The F was causing some trouble for Lyric, so we did drills on it for a while.
We then transitioned between chords, trying to keep fingers that were "in common" on the same strings between chords.
After that we looked up Something In the Orange, and worked on the verses together. It has a weird time signature (you have to really count). We focused on that for the rest of the lesson.

Lyric is doing well - I could tell he's been practising and has learned his first three chords quite well.
We added three new chords today, C F and D, and went through them. We also looked at his first song, Pink Skies, and I wrote out the beginning chords for him.
Remember no lessons on Thanksgiving.
September 29th, 2025
This was Lyric's first week, and he was very keen. We started out with changing one string on his guitar that had broken, and I showed him how to finish them at home.
We then learned three chords: E minor, G, and A minor. We went through them trying to play them on the strumming pattern of down, down, down-up, down (1, 2, 3 and 4).
I asked him to put together a list of songs he'd like to learn, to draw a picture of a guitar and label the parts, and to practise the chords every day for a few minutes.
